Quick reads are not a genre unto themselves, which means there isn't an agreed-upon length marking the line between long and short books. That said, most so-called short books have no more than 250 pages.
The universally agreed minimum word count for a novel is around 40,000 words. If your book is below this word count, it will be considered a novella.
It should hardly be a surprise that Stephen King's most popular book is also his first-ever bestseller: "The Shining," a classic 1977 horror novel, spurred a cult-favorite movie and a sequel.
The following novels occupy a shared universe and are pretty hefty reads for King beginners: Hearts in Atlantis, Desperation, It, Dreamcatcher, Duma Key, The Stand, The Tommyknockers, Rose Madder, Insomnia, and The Dark Tower series.
It was called Night Shift, and ever since its release King has been known equally as a novelist and a writer of short, spooky stories. In our opinion, Night Shift represents some of King's finest work and is easily his best short story collection, but it's not all equal.
A short story is 3-30 pages long. This number of pages works best when published in a literary magazine or similar publication. Check out Kindlepreneur's article on how to write short stories. Examples of short stories (1,000-10,000 word count):
Out of all the characters in Stephen King's works, the scariest is, without a doubt, Pennywise from It. Because Pennywise isn't given a tragic backstory in the films, all viewers know is that the killer clown is a paranormal entity who resides in drains and lures in children.
Using simple math, taking into account the average number of words on a page, we can quickly reach the conclusion that the average time to read 100 pages is roughly 2 hours and 45 minutes.
What is a small novel called?
What Is a Novelette? The definition of “novelette” is any short, fictional work of prose narrative. Novelettes have a lower number of words than a novel or novella, but a higher word count than other forms of prose fiction like short stories or microfiction.
Jesus Wept: "The Shortest, Short Story Ever Written and Published," Guinness World Records book… In a 2 worded sentence in a book in the New Testament portion of The Holy Bible, God Himself revealed both the Divinity and the Humanity of His only Son, Jesus Christ, with "Jesus wept."

1. “Baby Shoes” by Hemingway. This is 20th-century American author Ernest Hemingway's famous six-word story. You've probably heard of it.
Basic Audiobook Recording Info
Aka a 30,000 word book will be ~ a 3 hour audiobook, taking ~6 hours to record, and ~6-12 hours of additional work (~12-20 hours of work total).
Only one book (Order of the Phoenix) topped 200,000 words, but there were two books that came close with more than 190,000 words (Goblet of Fire and Deathly Hallows). When added all together, the Harry Potter books contain 1,084,170 words.
The Shining is Stephen King's top-selling book, and it is also his top-rated book on Goodreads. Therefore, it is a strong contender for the Stephen King book you should read first. The Shining was first published in 1977, with its sequel, Dr Sleep, published in 2013.
The most read book in the world is the Bible. Writer James Chapman created a list of the most read books in the world based on the number of copies each book sold over the last 50 years. He found that the Bible far outsold any other book, with a whopping 3.9 billion copies sold over the last 50 years.

Is 3 John the shortest book?
Third John is the shortest book of the Bible by word count, though 2 John has fewer verses. 3 John has 15 verses in the critical SBL Greek New Testament text, or 14 in the Textus Receptus. It is the only New Testament book which does not contain the names "Jesus" or "Christ".
The average reader will read 300 pages in 8.3 hours when reading at a speed of 300 words per minute (wpm). Typical documents that are 300 pages or more include full-length novels. A typical single-spaced page is 500 words long. You may read faster or slower than this depending on your average reading speed.
The Complete and Uncut Edition of The Stand is Stephen King's longest stand-alone work at 1,152 pages, surpassing his 1,138-page novel It.
Psalm 117 is the 117th psalm of the Book of Psalms, beginning in English in the King James Version: "O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people." In Latin, it is known as Laudate Dominum. Consisting of only two verses, Psalm 117 is the shortest psalm and also the shortest chapter in the whole Bible.
Book of Obadiah - Wikipedia.
"Jesus wept" (Koinē Greek: ἐδάκρυσεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, romanized: edákrusen ho Iēsoûs, pronounced [ɛˈdakrysɛn (h)o i. eˈsus]) is a phrase famous for being the shortest verse in the King James Version of the Bible, as well as in many other translations.
Just before he breathed his last breath, Jesus uttered the phrase “it is finished.” Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips.
While a slow reader will only get through 30 pages per hour, the average person can read around 40 pages per hour. Statistics show that quick readers can even go through 50 or 60 pages in one hour.
Answer: the average reader takes about 13.9 hours to read 500 pages. You might take more or less time than 13.9 hours to read 500 pages, depending on your reading speed and the difficulty of your text. The average person's reading speed is around 300 words per minute (WPM).
The most effective way to read more is to start with 25 pages a day. Twenty-five pages a day is almost 10,000 pages a year. The number of pages you read is not as important as the fact that you enjoy it.
What is the thickest book?
A book with a collection of all of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple stories is recognized by the Guinness World Records as the thickest book published. More than a foot thick, the 4,032-pages book weighs 8.04kg, and has 12 novels and 20 short stories.
- Nigel Blackwell – $292.5 Million.
- Barbara Taylor Bradford – $300 Million.
- Danielle Steel – $310 Million.
- Nora Roberts – $390 Million.
- Stephen King – $400 Million.
- James Patterson – $560 Million.
- J.K. Rowling – $1 Billion.
- Elisabeth Badinter – 1.3 Billion.
A 100-page book is too short to be considered a novel, regardless of the genre. Here's why: stories are classified according to their word counts. We'll dive deeper into that a little later, but for now, remember that if it's 100 pages long, or fewer than around 40,000 words, it's not a novel.
Most of our childhood favorites can be considered short novels or novellas, so no wonder it's comforting to have a handful of thinner books on our TBR pile. As a loose guide, short novels are 200 pages or fewer, novellas are 60 to 120 pages, and short stories average 4,000 words.
There are no rules when it comes to chapter length. The important thing is to concentrate on making your chapters fit your story, not on making your story fit your chapters. Many novelists these days prefer chapters that are between 1,500 words—or six book pages— and 8,000 words, or 32 book pages.
